Guide Trip FAQs

  • Should I book a trip?

At FISHFLi, we’re all about the experience. From the moment you send us your first message, to long after we leave the water, you’re our guest. Our goal is to exceed your expectations every step of the way. Combined with over 30 years of fly fishing experience, and over 15 years of professional guiding here in northern Michigan and abroad, you’re in good hands.

  • How do you determine availability?

“Loyalty is not built on features and benefits. Features and benefits do not inspire. Loyalty and long-lasting relationships are based on something deeper” - Simon Sinek

Those who have supported us along the way get first dibs. Otherwise… first-come, first-served.

  • Where are your prices?

Custom trips means custom prices. If you’re interested in our “standard” pricing, please contact us for more information.

  • Where will go for our trip?

Northern Michigan’s Tip of the Mitt offers endless opportunities for quality fly fishing. We spend most of our time on the flats of the northern Great Lakes and inland lakes, and chasing trout into the backcountry of our local rivers and creeks.

  • What should I bring?

Dress for the weather. Bring a rain jacket. Sunglasses are a necessity. A camera is a plus. Bug repellent and sunscreen are nice, but I’ll generally have it. And always feel free to bing your favorite rod, if you’d like.

  • What gear do you provide?

If you don’t have it. we probably do. Rods, reels, terminal tackle and flies are all provided. Waders are not provided.

  • Should I tip my guide? If so, what is appropriate?

Gratuity is customary in the fly fishing industry. 20% is a fair standard based on quality of service, educational experience, and opportunities presented.

  • Am I going to catch fish?

    “We’re guides, not Gods.”
Generally, how many fish end up in the net is based on two sets of factors. Things within the guide’s control (finding fish, education, presenting opportunities, etc.) and those outside of a guide’s control (angler ability, weather, water conditions, etc.).
We’ll do our best to ensure you have an enjoyable, and successful, trip.

  • Do I need a fishing license?

Fishing licenses are not provided. You may buy a fishing license at a local dealer, or online here.

  • What is your policy regarding weather?

We’ll generally fish, rain or shine. A number of factors go into deciding whether to cancel a trip based on weather, however, this is ultimately the guide’s decision. Safety is our utmost priority, and we will avoid dangerous, adverse conditions (high wave heights, lightning, etc.). Trips cancelled by the guest due to undesirable weather are not entitled to a refund.

  • Can I keep the fish?

We don’t believe it’s good practice to kill our business partners…

In all seriousness, we practice catch & release on all our trips. We’d like to make sure that our children get to experience these fisheries in the future.

  • What are your reservation and cancellation policies?

A $200 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your trip and a valid credit card must remain on file with our payment processor. Full payment is required no less than 30 days prior to scheduled trip. Any cancellation made within 30 days is not subject to refund.
